  • Retroactive Increase in 2014 Qualified Transportation Benefits

On December 19, 2014, President Obama signed the Tax Increase Prevention Act of 2014 (TIPA). The Act included changes to mass transit benefits, including a retroactive increase to the 2014 aggregate monthly limit for transit passes and vanpooling benefits (collectively, transit benefits). The monthly maximum for mass transit benefits provided to an employee has been increased from $130 to $250 for qualified transportation plans. However, the IRS notice 2015-2 dated January 8, 2015 clarified that employees cannot retroactively increase their 2014 compensation reduction elections to use the higher transit benefit limit, nor can they take additional compensation reductions in 2015 to pay for 2014 transit expenses. Transit benefits for 2015 will be the same as the pre-TIPA limits for 2014.

PacificSource Administrators is working closely with our clients to communicate these changes to those who may be eligible for the retroactive reimbursement increase. Participants may make a request to have claims incurred in 2014 reprocessed and paid at the higher monthly maximum by submitting an additional reimbursement request on or before the deadline for claim submission for their plan.
